Black History Month is an annual observance originating in the United States of America, where it is also known as African American History Month. BHM began as a way of remembering important people and events in the history of Africans in diaspora.
In the United Kingdom, BHM was first celebrated in October 1987, and in 2021 we had the honour of having the Mayor of the City of Sunderland the Right Worshipful the Mayor of the City of Sunderland, Cllr. Henry Trueman and The Mayoress of the City of Sunderland, Cllr. Dorothy Trueman, Cllr. Karen Noble representing Pallion ward and members of the Northumbria Police in attendance.
The event was well attended, and we had our Chair, Mr. Kingsley Okojie gave an historical perspective of the contribution made by prominent Africans in diaspora and we also had the honour of having one of the leading African Cultural dance groups, The Ndi-Igbo North East of England in attendance. We look forward to celebrating the 2022 edition of the BHM celebration.
